 ”55% of girls” means “55 girls per every hundred girls.”

Percents can be written in decimal form or in fraction form.

Example 1  Percents to Decimals:

To write 55% as a decimal,

move the decimal point two places to

the left. 55% means 55 hundredths.

55 hundredths can be written as 0.55

Example 2  Decimals to Percents:

To write a decimal as a percent,

move the decimal point two places to the right.

1.747  = 174.7%

Example 3  Percents to Fractions:

To write 55% as a fraction,

put the number over 100.

Simplify the fraction if you can.

55/100  simplifies to 11/20

Example 4  Fractions to Percents:

To write a 2/5 as a percent,

divide to find a decimal.

2 divided by 5  = 0.4

Then write the decimal as a percent.
